"It is difficult to ask people to join an idea, to join a dream."
Roland Berrill, co-founder of Mensa
In early December 1947, the first ever formal Mensa meeting took place. Seventy years on, let's use this anniversary as a reason to come together and celebrate the society!
70 Years of Mensa Meetings Celebration, 15:00, Hebden Bridge, Saturday 9th December 2017
We've booked out a cosy corner of The White Lion Hotel in Hebden Bridge. This is a traditional coaching inn with lovely warm log fires, perfect for us to hole up in on a cold December's day. They do proper country pub food and have a fab drinks selection; whether you're a cask ale fan or a gin connoisseur, there will be something for you. We may move on to explore a few more of the town's lovely pubs; if so we'll post updates on Facebook and Telegram.
We hope you can join us for the whole afternoon and into the evening, but you're more than welcome to pop in for as long as you like. All you need to bring is yourself... and maybe a board game!
If you've never been to a Mensa event before, then what could be a better way to start than the anniversary of Mensa's first meeting? Newcomers are always welcome; if you don't fancy turning up to meet a bunch of strangers then you could try talking to us in our Telegram chat group or on Facebook first - we're very welcoming.
We've chosen Hebden Bridge as it is pretty much where East meets West, and it has great transport links; we would love to see lots of people from all over the North of England and beyond. The last train back to Manchester is at 23:26 and to Leeds at 23:31, so there's no need to rush off early. If you're coming from either Manchester or Leeds, and want to meet up en route, let us know on Telegram or Facebook.
If you do decide to drive you should be able to find on street parking, or alternatively try using Parkopedia; there are a few car parks in the town for around £3 for the whole day.
If you get lost
If you need help finding us then you can call or text the Phone Robot for directions, or "encouragement": 0144 360 6367.
We also always keep a close eye on our Telegram group during all our events, so if you're lost or running late, you can get in touch with us there - and it's a great place to chat with us when we aren't running events, too.
