Edinburgh Wine Tasting and Dinner, Saturday 21st October 2017

Whether you want to take your first steps into the exciting world of wine, increase your existing knowledge or just taste some incredible (and expensive) wines, everyone from novice to know-it-all is welcome to join us at the first Young Mensa North wine tasting event. Share in our local sommelier's passion and delve deep into some specially selected wines, followed by a leisurely and tasty dinner and all-round merriness to end the evening.

Location

Drinkmonger, 11 Bruntsfield Place, Edinburgh
16:00, Saturday 21st October 2017

Opened in October 2011 with an extensive range of fine alcohols, Drinkmongers quickly established itself as the best place in Edinburgh to buy Scottish gin, specialty beers and excellent wines from around the globe. With a cracking Fine Wine room through the back, this is the place to host wine tastings under the guidance of professional sommelier Alan.

o

We will be tasting an expertly chosen range of reds, whites, rose and champagnes while Alan will explain all about how to detect the intricate flavours of each of the wines and how the different notes were influenced by the wines age, origin and grapes.

Are you a supertaster?

The session will start with us trying out a super-taster kit to determine who has the best taste buds in Young Mensa North. Through the use of a phenylthiocarbamide test strip we will determine who (if any!) of us belongs to the 5% of the population with superior taste buds.

How to register

To secure your place please register your interest by submitting the full deposit of £25 to enable us to budget accordingly. Places are strictly limited to 12 people so book soon to avoid disappointment!

Reserve your place

We will then head to dinner at a nearby eatery to let the evening end in style with great food, more drinks and even greater company. This will be decided nearer the time once we have a confirmed number of attendants.

How to get there

Drinkmonger is at Bruntsfield Place, opposite the upper section of the Meadows. Any Lothian bus that goes to Morningside will get you there (11, 15, 16, 23, 36, 45) or take a short walk up from Tollcross towards Bruntsfield, Stop ID: 36236387 (Whitehouse Loan).

If you are coming to Edinburgh by train, from Waverley Station the Lothian Bus 23 from Hanover Street will take you there. Haymarket Station is a brisk 15-20 minute walk away.

Dinner

blackbird

We will be having dinner at the Black Bird Pub and Restaurant following the wine tasting event at 6pm. Please feel free to join us for the dinner only, the wine tasting only, or both! You can view the food menu here. They claim to have the best beer garden in Edinburgh (probably...) but unless it is unseasonably warm on Saturday, we will probably be sitting inside. Winner of the Scottish Style Award 2013, the Blackbird brings together house batch cocktails, craft beers, great food and weekly live music sessions.

The pub is located just 1 minute's walking distance from Drinkmonger at 37-39 Leven Street, Bruntsfield, Edinburgh, EH3 9LH.

If you are only joining us in the pub, view personalised directions here.

If you get lost

If you need help finding us then you can call or text the Phone Robot for directions, or "encouragement": 0144 360 6367

We also always keep a close eye on our Telegram group during all our events, so if you're lost or running late, you can get in touch with us there - and it's a great place to chat with us when we aren't running events, too.
