To broaden our spectrum of intellectual and creative pursuits, Young Mensa North are organising a photography afternoon around Manchester city centre, with a photo competition at the end of it.
Recent discussions have brought to light the fact that many of our regulars are interested in photography; if you already spend time taking photographs, this will be an opportunity to explore that shared interest with fellow Mensans - and if you don't yet, this outing might kindle a new passion!
Photo Walk starting from the Alan Turing Memorial, Sackville Gardens - 14:00, Sunday the 26th of June.
We'll meet at the Alan Turing Memorial in Sackville Gardens near Canal Street, itself a good starting point as a photographic subject. Once gathered, we'll walk west along Canal Street offering some opportunities for street photography, and then down to the canal itself. We'll proceed along the canal to Deansgate Locks where canal boats moor, under the spectacular railway arches, perhaps capturing images of some urban wildlife along the way. We'll then head back towards town past the ruins in the Castlefield Urban Heritage Park and towards the skyline-dominating Beetham Tower, which brings us neatly for a drink break to a Young Mensa favourite pub, The Cask.
We're making no assumptions about level of skill or equipment. You'll fit in whether you bring a professional DSLR, just your mobile phone camera, or anything in between. Those newer to the art can pick up tips from the more experienced, and the latter can exchange ideas.* [Map link](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Alan+Turing+Memorialfirstname.lastname@example.org,-2.2377393,17z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0000000000000000:0xeec5552d4d065c1d!8m2!3d53.4766988!4d-2.2359753) * [Planned route](https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Alan+Turing+Memorial,+Fairfield+St,+Manchester+M1+3HB,+United+Kingdom/53.4761936,-2.2383709/53.4750264,-2.2571105/Castlefield+Urban+Heritage+Parkemail@example.com,-2.2534503,15.5z/data=!4m27!4m26!1m5!1m1!1s0x487bb1956c1484c1:0xeec5552d4d065c1d!2m2!1d-2.2359753!2d53.4766988!1m0!1m0!1m10!1m1!1s0x487bb1e7a7602795:0xb57aa97c5bef83bb!2m2!1d-2.2538238!2d53.4755956!3m4!1m2!1d-2.2526885!2d53.4753539!3s0x487bb1e7b77f41c7:0x6c8aa4480fbeb427!1m5!1m1!1s0x0:0x7e3188a0bed2d3c7!2m2!1d-2.2523274!2d53.4758975!3e2) * [RSVP on Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/events/497786137098360/) * [Retweet](https://twitter.com/YoungMensaNorth/status/743887892108423168) * [Discuss on Reddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/YoungMensaNorth/comments/4okxog/city_photo_walk_26th_of_june/) * If you'd like to get philosophical about photography as an art form, check out the recent guest blog post about [Photography and Artistic Forgery](/blog/photography-and-artistic-forgery/).
To get to the Alan Turing Memorial, just walk west two blocks from Picadilly Station which is convenient for both the trains and the trams.
At the time of writing, it's too early to guess what the weather will be like, so we're choosing to be optimistic - however, the walk will go ahead even if there's rain (although perhaps with an altered route), so dress according to the weather on the day.
To add a bit of challenge to the day, we'll be having a little photo competition online, once everyone has had a chance to get home and process their photos. The rules:
- Your entry must consist of one photograph taken between the official start and end time of the photo walk.
- Your entry may be either a digital photograph or a scan of a film photograph.
- You must submit your entry in digital form to the special email address you'll receive on the day.
- Submission deadline is midnight on Friday the 1st of July - this should allow time for film users to develop and scan as well as processing.
- Your entry must be scaled to a maximum of 800 pixels on the longest side.
- You may use any digital editing tools at your disposal, but you may not create any new elements in the image which did not exist in the original.
- You may not add any text, watermarks or other identifying marks to your image.
Judging will be by public anonymous vote; Images will be shown anonymously online, and viewers will be asked to anonymously rate each image on a scale of 1 to 5. Voting will last one week. Winners will be announced on our social media - we might make you famous!
If this format proves to be successful and popular, Young Mensa photo contests may become a regular recurring event in the future.
If you get lost
If you get lost on the day, as always, you can call or text the Phone Robot for assistance, directions and encouragement: 0144 360 6367 If you're joining us late, you can always catch up - text or call and we'll let you know our present whereabouts.
We're also active on our Telegram group, which is a good way to catch us for last minute directions, and to share your photos after the walk. See you there!
