Whether you want to be Mensa International Photographer of the Year or just fancy a sunny walk in the Yorkshire air, why not join us for a relaxing afternoon in the great outdoors?
Sheffield and Tinsley Canal, 15:00, Sunday 24th June 2018
Every year, Mensa crowns their International Photographer of the Year and the theme for this year's contest is "What a Wonderful World". Whether you are a seasoned professional or have never used a camera beyond that on your phone, all are welcome to come and have a go.
This event has been created to encourage competition entries from the North East, but if you're not bothered about the contest or have already planned your winning entry, please still feel free to come along. There are entry details on the Mensa website.
As announced in June's Spotlight, members in the North East can also enter their photos in an additional competition to become the 'face' of the regional Facebook group.
We will meet inside Costa Coffee on the lower level of Meadowhall (L81 on the centre map, next to Debenhams) at 15:00 and set off on foot from there at 15:30.
When we reach the canal we will first walk towards Victoria Quays, three miles away. There are old buildings (or parts of them) down this stretch, as well as Tinsley Locks, which could make excellent subjects for photographs.
We will walk at least partway towards Victoria Quays before we return to our starting point. Those that wish to continue will then follow the canal towards Rotherham, where it drops into the river, with some interesting views. Those that don't wish to continue or are short of time can leave us after the first leg.
Meadowhall has its own train station and tram stop at Meadowhall Interchange, a short walk away. If you're driving, park in the shopping centre's red or yellow car park, accessible from the roundabout to/from the ring road and M1.
There are several more tram stops close to the canal along our route, for if you can only join us for part of the walk. This also means latecomers can join us at a convenient point - just let us know on Facebook or Telegram and we'll look out for you.
